Century House Residents' Association

Pictures taken on 9, 23 and 30 December 2001 and 13 January 2002. Click on the thumbnail picture for a full-size picture. (I'm hoping that architect John Bradley (Flat 30) can help provide more meaningful descriptions.)

Main entrance, on corner of Streatham High Road and Hopton Road. Similar aspect to right-hand brochure picture on front page of web site. I'm not sure the clocks have worked since Century House was converted. 30-Dec-2001.
High Road and Hopton Road facing elevations. Similar aspect to left-hand brochure picture on front page of this site. 30-Dec-2001.
High Road facing elevation. Window facade is in a poor state of repair - see below for pictures taken from inside. 30-Dec-2001.
High Road and Albert Carr Gardens facing elevations. Note telecom masts and structure enclosing power cables at left of ACG facing elevation. 30-Dec-2001.

Corner stone dated 22 June 1938 (situated on the High Road, close to the main entrance). 23-Dec-2001.
Main window facade, section shared with flats, ground floor level. 9-Dec-2001.
Main window facade, section shared with flats, 1st to 3rd floors. 9-Dec-2001. All flats (including ground floor, shown in picture above) with windows in this facade suffer from water penetration through the structure.
Slipway to Bin Store at back of block. Lots of graffiti (which also exists on Hopton Road walls; from time to time it's removed by StreetScene, a Lambeth service). 9-Dec-2001.
Missing rendering by slipway to Bin Store. Rendering was removed as a result of a fire in June 1999 but has still to be replaced. 9-Dec-2001.
Entrance to Bin Store. Blocked drain has now been unblocked. 9-Dec-2001.
Fire exit door by slipway to bin store. Door was also damaged by June 1999 fire and has yet to be repaired. 9-Dec-2001.
External entrance to garage. Garage door used to be operated by remote control, now it has to be opened manually which means, if you're driving in, parking the car and walking 'round to open the door from inside. 9-Dec-2001.
Entrance to roof from goods lift room. This ladder and entrance were installed, at no cost (weren't we lucky!), along with the Orange base station (previously there was a wooden ladder situated on a raised platform). 23-Dec-2001.
Entrance to roof. Note warning board message: pacemakers and radiowave emissions may not mix; perhaps radiowave emissions are harmful in other ways too? 9-Dec-2001.
Water ponding on roof above Flat 29 which recently needed repair work (cost £4,500) as a result of water penetration. Did the Dolphin installation contribute this? 13-Jan-2002.
Roof from corner above High Road and Hopton Road. 13-Jan-2002.
Dolphin aerial #1. The makeshift pulley has been in pace since August 1999 when it used to transport - clumsily and rather dangerously, it seemed - the main section of one of the aerials. 9-Dec-2001.
Dolphin aerial #2. It's easy to see why Century House is a good site for mobile telecom masts: it offers uninterrupted coverage for miles around. 9-Dec-2001.
Orange aerials and base station. Erected in 1996(?). 23-Dec-2001.
Artistic shot(?) of Orange ensemble. 9-Dec-2001.
Satellite dish on roof. Our leases do not permit these! (And it doesn't help our case against the telecom masts.) 9-Dec-2001.
Flat roof, by side of Orange base station. Another satellite dish. 9-Dec-2001.
Detaching(?) concrete slab above main entrance. Am now pleased to see (11-Jan-2002) that scaffold has been erected to enable this to be fixed. 9-Dec-2001.
Another shot of the detaching/loose slab (can just make out clock hands to right of slab). 23-Dec-2001.
Scaffold in place for fixing of detaching/loose slab. 13-Jan-2002.

Rubbish dumped in 1st cupboard on right at bottom of back stairway. 9-Dec-2001.
Ground floor at end of corridor by back stairway. Graffiti. 9-Dec-2001.
Ground floor, light fitting by Flat 3. Many light fittings look like this. This one is dangerous  and I received a shock when attempting to replace the spent bulb. 9-Dec-2001.
Basement, by goods lift. 9-Dec-2001.
Basement, gas meter room. Cleared of rubbish. 9-Dec-2001.
Basement, gas meter room (2). 9-Dec-2001.
Garage, pillar by internal entrance. Continuous ponding of water due to blocked drain by external garage entrance appears to have caused corrosion. 9-Dec-2001.
Garage, pillar by internal entrance. Close up. 9-Dec-2001.
Garage, to left of external entrance (looking from inside). Note deterioration of wall. Glass panes have been here for as long as I can remember. 9-Dec-2001.
Garage, looking out on to Hopton Road. 9-Dec-2001.

High Road window facade, passenger lift side, first(?) floor. 9-Dec-2001.
High Road window facade, passenger lift side, second(?) floor. Top frame is detaching from building - can see daylight through it. 9-Dec-2001.
High Road window facade from third floor looking down. Scaffold is in place to enable replacement of panes. From a distance, frames look unhealthy. 9-Dec-2001.
High Road window facade, rusty frame - pane in process of being replaced. 9-Dec-2001.
High Road window facade, middle section, second floor. This cracked window with hole (a small hole, but a hole nonetheless) has not been replaced and won't be along with 8 other damaged panes - see CHRA letter of 12-Dec-2001 and CPS response of 3-Jan-2002. 23-Dec-2001.
High Road window facade, adjacent cracked panes and rotting frame. 23-Dec-2001.
High Road window facade, section of frame coming loose. 23-Dec-2001.
High Road window facade, ground floor looking up. 23-Dec-2001.
Main stairway, second floor. Carpet which was badly ripped and dangerous to walk over has been taken up to expose parquet flooring. Parquet flooring, art-deco railings, good window structure: this could look quite attractive. 30-Dec-2001.
Scaffold for window repairs. Protruding pole from above. 9-Dec-2001.
